Vehicle Description

Here we have a lovely piece of Mini history! Built in 1968 by Austin/Morris Cowley in Division 2 to specifically compete and promote the forthcoming new Duckhams Race series. The car was purely a Factory Road Saloon Race car. It was not registered for the road until 1972. Leyland ran a celebrity guest driver car. The drivers were ineligible for any championship points. Drivers included Mike Smith and Tony Pond who personally competed in three races coming 3rd at Llnadow on April 11 1968. It was not the intention of going out and winning but to promote. At the end of the season the team came 5th overall. At that time the colour of the car was Blaze. It was not registered until 1972 when it was given the number UWL 744K. It was then sold to a member of the general public who owned the car from 1972 – 78. The following two owners had the car from 1978 to 1983. From ’83 Mike Smith owned the car and changed its colour scheme from Blaze to Blue/White. Purchasing the car with a view of racing it on the track, Mike decided after a couple of events to undertake a rebuild into International Rally Specification Group A rally car to contest the European Championship Tarmac Rallies in the South of France. It was thought that the Minis eligibility ran out at the end of 1985 so an entry was put in for the 1200 km Rally D’Entibes, a qualifier for the European Championship. When the homologation ran out it was extended for the final year of 1986 so a team of three Minis were independantly prepared for the following season.

Successive years saw UWL 744K enter into Historic events and also feature on Top Gear in 1990 with Chris Goffey. A DVD is included with the Top Gear footage.

Featured in – Car Magazine, Jan 1986. Numerous copies of Motoring News 1985/86. Rallysport 1985/86. Mighty Minis book by Chris Harvey and Car and Conversions 1987.

From 1999 to 2018 the car was owned by former Mini rally driver Geoff Northmore who came out of retirement to give the car selected competitive outings! The history files are huge, including Full Homologation Papers, competition history and invoices. On the road the car drives extremely well and is sure to put a big grin on your face. A definite piece of Mini history..
